HGST, formerly known as Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital company, has launched the Ultrastar C10K1800 hard disk drive, which, according to HGST, is the world’s most spacious and fastest 10K hard drive.

The Ultrastar C10K1800 enterprise-class disk drive comes in the common 2.5-inch form factor and combines 1.8 TB of storage space with excellent performance and rotational speed of 10 000 rpm. The new drive offers a number of important tech innovations that include HGST’s new media cache architecture, an upgraded 12 Gbps SAS interface, advanced format options and better reliability that makes it a perfect match for 24/7 enterprise workloads. Power efficiency is also improved – the Ultrastar C10K1800 has up to 7 per cent improvement in active and idle power savings. Data security is guaranteed by technologies such as Instant Secure Erase (ISE), Self-Encrypting Drives (SED), Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) and more.

The Ultrastar C10K1800 comes with 2 million hours of MTBF, an annualized failure rate (AFR) of 0.44 per cent and a five-year warranty. The drive is available now while the FIPS-enabled model will arrive in January 2015. Price was not mentioned.
