Office 2013 won’t support Windows XP, Vista

The latest Office 2013 news from Microsoft may bring grief to people with older PCs – the upcoming Office 2013 software suite won’t support Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Instead the software package will insist on having Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012 – these will be the only Microsoft operating systems capable of running Microsoft’s latest Office suite.

In addition to the OS requirements the US software giant published clearer system requirements for Office 2013. To run the software you will need to have a PC with the following specs:

  • CPU: 1 GHz or faster x86 or x64 processor
  • RAM: 1 GB for x86 or 2 GB for x64
  • Storage: 3 GB of available hard disk drive space
  • Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer 8, 9, or 10; Mozilla Firefox 10.x or a later version; Apple Safari 5; or Google Chrome 17.x.
  • .NET version: 3.5 or higher
  • Multi-touch: A touch-enabled device is required to use any multi-touch functionality. However, all features and functionality are always available by using a keyboard, mouse, or other standard or accessible input device. Note that new touch features are optimized for use with Windows 8.
  • Hardware acceleration requires DirectX10-compatible graphics card

Given all new features and possibilities that Office 2013 will offer – among which a new Windows 8-like look, touch screen functions, Skype and SkyDrive integration – it might be worth upgrading to Windows 7 or later or even a newer PC. It’s up to you to decide.
